To improve photos that you take with your digital camera, you can use digital image editing software. Photoshop is perhaps the best known of these programs, but it's expensive, and there are other free options that will do the same things. A good example is GIMP. The only drawback is that the help documentation is very sparse and the tutorials on the GIMP website tend to be about advanced topics, so beginners can find it frustrating to get comfortable with this program.

One basic function is how to change image size. You can change this with the "Scale Image…"menu option. You only need to change the width or the length, not both, to get the best quality image because GIMP will scale the rest for you. To make jpegs smaller, you can save the image as a a different file extension, in the JPEG Save Dialog, you can opt for the GIMP defaults which will reduce the weight without distorting the image.

There are times when you want your pictures to be totally realistic, and other times when you want to get creative and let your imagination wander as you edit your digital photos. For example, you may wish you could cut your subject out of one photograph and put it into another, there is an automatic extraction tool is Photoshop Elements that lets you do just that. It's called Magic Extractor, and with a simple trace outline of your subject it will automatically separate it out of the picture for you.

After doing this, you can easily copy and paste your subject into the other photo using the Rectangular Marquee tool in Photoshop as well. You can reposition and resize your image until the desired look is achieved. Besides built in Photoshop tools like these, there are also third-party solutions designed to work with Photoshop such as Digital Film Tools EZ Mask, and you will get dramatically more accurate results with very little effort.
